Rooted in Strength, Growing with Purpose

Meet the Founder

Dr. Coleman, a passionate advocate for social justice and equity, has dedicated her career to addressing the systemic challenges faced by underserved, at-risk girls within the BIPOC community, particularly those aged 11-18.

Witnessing firsthand the barriers that these young girls encounter, Dr. Coleman was inspired to create Embrace Her Roots, a non-profit organization committed to tackling the multifaceted issues that disproportionately affect them.

6 Pillars of Empowerment and Growth by Embrace Her Roots

The 6 Pillars of Embrace Her Roots represent a comprehensive and intentional framework for empowering BIPOC girls, fostering their personal, educational, and leadership development while celebrating their unique identities. These pillars serve as the foundation for creating a nurturing, inclusive, and dynamic environment where participants can flourish:

  • Empowerment

.Embrace Her Roots prioritizes building confidence and self-worth by equipping participants with the tools, skills, and mentorship needed to embrace their identities and pursue their passions. Empowerment is at the heart of fostering resilience and a sense of agency.

  • Education

Education is critical for closing opportunity gaps and unlocking potential. By focusing on financial literacy, academic success, and digital literacy, this pillar equips participants with the knowledge and resources to excel in their academic and professional pursuits.

  • Emotional Well-Being

Embrace Her Roots creates spaces where participants can openly discuss mental health, build resilience, and learn to advocate for their emotional needs. This pillar ensures participants feel supported and empowered to face life's challenges.

  • Community Engagement

Through service projects and collaborative initiatives, this pillar instills a sense of social responsibility, encouraging participants to give back and make meaningful contributions to their communities while fostering connections with others.

  • Cultural Celebration

Embrace Her Roots uplifts the rich cultural heritage of each participant, fostering pride, belonging, and awareness. Celebrating diversity strengthens personal identity and encourages mutual respect and understanding.

  • Leadership Development

Cultivating future leaders is central to Embrace Her Roots' mission. By offering opportunities to take on leadership roles, participate in workshops, and build critical skills such as decision-making, communication, and public speaking, this pillar ensures participants grow into confident, capable leaders. Mentorship and peer support are emphasized as vital components of this growth.

Embrace Her Roots is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering and uplifting BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) girls ages 11-18 by fostering their emotional well-being, promoting educational and financial literacy, and cultivating leadership and resilience. We strive to create a supportive community that celebrates cultural identity, bridges educational gaps, and equips girls with the tools needed to navigate digital spaces and advocate for their own health and mental well-being.

At Embrace Her Roots, we are committed to tackling critical issues head-on.

Poverty

  • Poverty Rates: According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Black children have one of the highest poverty rates among all racial and ethnic groups. In 2019, about 30% of Black children were living in poverty compared to 10% of white children.

  • Food Insecurity: The USDA reported that in 2020, 21.7% of Black households with children were food insecure, compared to 6.5% of white households

Housing Instability

  • Homelessness: The National Center for Homeless Education reported that Black students represent 26% of the homeless student population, despite Black people making up only about 13% of the U.S. population.

  • Frequent Moves: Studies have shown that frequent moves can disrupt education and negatively impact academic performance. Black families are more likely to face housing instability due to economic hardships.

Underfunded Schools

  • Funding Disparities: Research by EdBuild found that school districts serving predominantly students of color receive $23 billion less in funding annually than predominantly white school districts, despite serving the same number of students.

  • Resource Gaps: Schools in predominantly Black neighborhoods often lack access to advanced placement courses, extracurricular activities, and updated learning materials, contributing to a lower quality of education

School-to-Prison Pipeline

  • Disproportionate Discipline: According to the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, Black girls are suspended at higher rates than girls of any other race or ethnicity and at higher rates than most boys. They are over 5 times more likely to be suspended than white girls.

  • Juvenile Justice: Black girls represent about 14% of the U.S. population under 18, but they account for more than 34% of girls detained and committed to juvenile facilities.

Mental Health

  • Trauma and Mental Health: The American Psychological Association notes that Black girls are more likely to experience trauma, including witnessing or experiencing violence, which significantly impacts their mental health.

  • Access to Care: Black adolescents are less likely to receive mental health treatment compared to their white counterparts. In 2019, only 35% of Black adolescents with major depressive episodes received treatment, compared to 50% of white adolescents.
